Arkansas One Call and Texas Gas met in Searcy, Arkansas earilier this month for a planning session covering work that is to be done for Texas Gas. In this meeting Mike Gowen, Damage Prevention Coordinator, and various representitives of Texas gas discussed topics vital to damage prevention, such as work schedules, contact information, calling in locate requests to Arkansas One Call, communication, and public safety.
There were 65 people representing over 25 different organizations attending.

The Arkansas Heavy Equipment Operator Training Academy class toured the Arkansas One Call Center in Conway Arkansas February 28, 2008. There were 17 students and faculty members that made the trip from Warren.
A brief welcome was given by Mike Gowen, Damage Prevention Coordinator. Kristin Bryant, General Manager of Arkansas One Call , then showed the class around the Call Center and fielded questions concerning the center. The students had the opportunity to witness an actual locate request being taken and see the importance of accurate directions.
Mrs. Bryant gave an informative presentation pertaining to the One Call Center followed by Mr. Gowen with a presentation concerning the law, damage prevention, and public safety. After a short break, ARKUPS General Manager Pat McCarron discussed the inception of ARKUPS and also talked about the actual locating of underground lines. After lunch, Mr. Gowen headed up a short question and answer session. All in all the sessions proved to be very beneficial to all.
Arkansas One Call took it's first locate request 30 years ago this month. Starting with just a couple CSRs, the call center has grown and now has over 16 full time CSRs and now takes over 300,000 locate requests per year.
The first call was taken at 9:00 am, January 4th 1978. It was called in by Kenneth Billings with AP&L.
The 2007 AOC Database Verification has begun. This year, any member with an Internet connection can view their database online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can even submit your database verification form online. No more waiting for CD’s or DVD’s in the mail or wasting money printing paper maps. Just simply go online, view your database, fill out the form, and your done!
All you have to do is register to use the Member Service Area Mapping Utility and you’re ready to go. Once you’re registered, log in to the tool and look over your database. As you view your database, if you notice an area that needs changes, simply print that area out, make the necessary changes and mail them back to us. Also, if you have the ability to scan at your office, you can scan your changes in and email the scanned image to us. Unfortunately, due to the image quality of faxes, we cannot accept faxed maps. In the future, you will be able to make your changes online, instead of having to print the maps out and mail the changes in.
As in the past, your verification must be submitted or returned to Arkansas One Call no later than January 1st. Any members that have not submitted their verification will be considered accurate as shown in our system.

Now anyone calling in a locate request can simply dial 811 and you'll be answered by your local One Call center. 811 is a "new, federally-mandated national "Call Before You Dig" number, created to help protect you from unintentionally hitting underground utility lines while working on digging projects."
