What's the 2-10-20 working day rules?
- A locate request must be called in at least two, but not more than ten working days
in advance of the proposed work.
- The request is "good" for twenty working days (see renewal requirements).
When do I have to renew a locate request?
- If the work does not begin within ten working days,
- If the work will continue past twenty working days (we suggest on the eighteenth working day), or
- Anytime the markings are no longer visible.
- Remember, utilities will have two working days to respond to your renewal.
What's a working day?
- Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. through 5 p.m., except for holidays.
- Observed Holidays - New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
If a holiday falls on a weekend, the holiday is observed either the Friday before or the Monday after the weekend.
What else do I need to know about working days?
- With few exceptions (see State Law) a utility locator must respond to a locate request within two working days.
- Although a CSR is available to take locate requests 24/7, the time outside of the defined working days is primarily
for emergency requests. If you call in a regular request during this time period, your "working days" calculation for the
utility response will be affected.
** One of the best ways to prevent damage is to coordinate and communicate with the different utility locators that respond to your request. Making sure your locate request stays valid is an excellent step in the process!
When Will My Work Site Get Marked?
- If you call in at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the two working days calculation starts at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday
(the next business day), making the locate due Friday at 7:00 a.m.
- If you call in at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the two working days calculation starts at 7:00 a.m. that day
(the start of the closest business day). Two working days would be up Friday at 7:00 a.m.
- If you call in on a Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Monday is Memorial Day, the two working days calculation skips
Monday, making the locate due Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
- If you call in on Wednesday, December 24, at 9:00 a.m., the two working days calculation skips Thursday
(Christmas Day). Two working days would be up Monday at 9 a.m.
- If you call in on Wednesday, July 4 at 2:00 p.m., the two working days calculation does not in Wednesday
(a holiday) and starts on Thursday at 7:00 a.m. (the next business day). Two working days would be up Monday
at 7:00 a.m.
The weekend is never included in the two working days calculation. So locates called in on Thursday, are normally
due on Monday. Locates called in on Friday, are normally due on Tuesday.
**When projects are delayed or are lengthy in time and location, the utility locator and excavator should establish
and maintain on-going communication and coordination until the excavation or demolition is completed.
Submitting requests for what can be accomplished in one work week is a good way to establish communication and
coordination. Subsequent requests limited to the next work week or renewals for only the portion that needs remarked
are a way to maintain the communication and coordination.
