What do I need to know?

Utility Responsibilities

After receiving notice of an intent to dig, all utilities (including those that are not AOC members**) are required to:

  • Mark the approximate center line of the underground lines they own at the work site within two working days, unless otherwise agreed to,
  • Mark the approximate horizontal course of the lines within 18” either side of the center line,
  • Mark lines with the appropriate APWA designated color, and
  • Contact the excavator or leave information at the site if they do not own underground lines in the area.
  • Establish and maintain communication and coordination on projects which are delayed or lengthy until the project is completed.

In addition, AOC member utilities are required to:

  • Provide the AOC Call Center with a database of the geographic areas where they have underground lines, and
  • Notify the AOC Call Center of changes in that database within 30 days.

** AOC does not notify non member facility owners. If a non member underground facility owner is notified by someone intending to dig, the facility owner is required, under State Law, to respond in the same manner as an AOC member.
